Basic Dilution Principles for Oxalic Acid Solutions
Basic Dilution Principles for Oxalic Acid Solutions
The chemical properties of oxalic acid (ethanedioic acid) require precise control of dilution ratios. Commercial oxalic acid is typically available in two forms: crystalline powder and pre-prepared solutions. Crystalline powder has high purity (usually ≥99%) and must be prepared from scratch, while 30%-50% pre-mixed solutions require secondary dilution.
For crystalline oxalic acid powder, the standard safe ratio is 15–25 grams of powder per 100 grams of water, corresponding to a concentration of approximately 13%–20%. This range ensures effective decomposition of common contaminants like rust and limescale while avoiding corrosion to most substrates. Experimental data shows that when the concentration exceeds 25%, the corrosion rate on stainless steel increases exponentially.
Pre-prepared solutions should be diluted using a stepwise approach. A 30% stock solution is recommended to be diluted at a ratio of 1:5 to 1:10 (stock solution : water) to obtain a 3%–5% working solution. A 50% stock solution should be diluted at 1:10 to 1:20 to achieve a usable concentration of 2.5%–5%. This staged dilution ensures the solution remains uniform and stable, preventing localized over-concentration.
