Formic Acid Spill Emergency Response
Evacuate personnel from the contaminated area to a safe zone immediately, isolate the area, and strictly restrict access. Cut off all ignition sources. It is recommended that emergency responders wear self-contained positive-pressure breathing apparatus and acid-alkali resistant work clothes. Do not come into direct contact with the spilled material. Shut off the leak source as much as possible. Prevent the spill from formic acid entering confined spaces such as sewers or drainage ditches.
Formic Acid Small Spill: Adsorb or absorb with sand or other non-combustible materials. Alternatively, sprinkle soda ash on the ground, then rinse thoroughly with large amounts of water, and discharge the diluted wash water into the wastewater system.
Formic Acid Large Spill: Construct dikes or dig pits to contain the spill. Cover with foam to reduce vapor hazards. Spray water mist to cool and dilute the vapor. Transfer the liquid to tank trucks or special collectors using pumps, then recover or transport it to a waste treatment facility for disposal.
