Physically, Oxalic acid appears as colorless monoclinic plate or prismatic crystals, or a white powder. Oxalic acid produced by oxidation methods is odorless, while that from synthesis methods may have a distinct smell. It sublimes at 150–160°C and effloresces in hot, dry air. Its solubility profile is well-defined: 1 g dissolves in 7 mL water, 2 mL boiling water, 2.5 mL ethanol, 1.8 mL boiling ethanol, 100 mL ether, or 5.5 mL glycerol, but is insoluble in benzene, chloroform, and petroleum ether. A 0.1 mol/L solution has a pH of 1.3. Its relative density (at 18.54°C) is 1.653, with a melting point of 101–102°C (for the dihydrate) or 187°C (anhydrous form). It is classified as low-toxic, with a dermal LD₅₀ (rabbit) of 2000 mg/kg.
