Oxalic Acid: Usage and Dosage
Oxalic acid is a highly acidic compound with certain toxicity, mainly used in industrial cleaning, pharmaceutical synthesis, descaling and rust removal in specific fields. Direct contact may easily cause burns. It is mandatory to wear protective clothing, protective gloves and goggles throughout the process, and keep the operating environment well-ventilated to prevent the accumulation of acid mist in enclosed spaces. Below is a categorized elaboration on usage and dosage based on different scenarios, with flexible adjustments to ratios and dilution rates in industrial applications.
Metal rust removal:Prepare a solution with a concentration of 8%–12% (enhanced effect in a high-temperature alkaline environment). Dissolve 800 g to 1.2 kg of oxalic acid powder or crystals in every 10 kg of clean water. Spray the solution twice on the surface of large mechanical equipment or pipelines for stable results, with a single reaction time of about 15 minutes. After wiping, rinse with clean water until neutral to prevent residual acid from corroding materials.
Textile printing and dyeing auxiliaries: The dissolution step is particularly critical. Under normal pressure and high temperature (80°C–100°C), use 15 L of oxalic acid solution (3% concentration) per cubic meter of textile volume. Immerse the textile in the drum equipment until the solution penetrates the fibers, then treat for 8–12 minutes. Monitor discoloration and fabric changes in real time.
For household use, the dosage should be significantly reduced to avoid health risks:
To clean toilet tiles, use a dilute solution with a concentration of 1%–1.5%. Typically, dissolve 40–60 g of oxalic acid blocks in 2 L of clean water, let it sit on the stain for no more than 3 minutes, then scrub with a hard brush.
For stubborn rust spots on floor tiles with a small area, directly apply the stock solution to cover the marks and rinse with clean water within 5 minutes.
Note that after cleaning with oxalic acid, a waxy layer often forms on the tile surface, causing visual blurring. It is recommended to finish with a professional polish or neutral soapy water for a buffing effect.
