It exists as colorless acicular crystals, featuring deliquescence, strong hygroscopicity and susceptibility to oxidation; hydrogen sulfide and sulfur may release during storage. Industrial-grade product is commonly supplied as orange or yellow aqueous solution with bitter taste.
Highly soluble in water and alcohol; its aqueous solution is strongly alkaline. It decomposes upon contact with acid to produce hydrogen sulfide gas, and H₂S is generated when dissolved in hydrochloric acid.
Prone to hydrolysis in humid air to form sodium hydroxide and sodium hydrosulfide complex; it acts as strong oxidizing acid to corrode zinc, aluminum, copper and their alloys. It decomposes and releases hydrogen sulfide when reaching melting point.
