Oxalic acid, also known as ethanedioic acid, has the structural formula HOOCCOOH and a molar mass of 126.07. It typically exists as the dihydrate, appearing as colorless transparent crystals or a white powder, odorless with a sour taste. It has two crystal forms: the α-form (rhombic) and β-form (monoclinic). Their melting points and relative densities (at 17°C/4°C) are: α-form at 189.5°C with a density of 1.900; β-form at 182°C with a density of 1.895. When exposed to dry air or heated, it loses its water of crystallization. Oxalic acid is volatile and sublimes readily: it begins to sublime at 100°C, sublimes rapidly at 125°C, and sublimes extensively while starting to decompose at 157°C. It is soluble in hot water and ethanol, slightly soluble in cold water, sparingly soluble in diethyl ether, and insoluble in benzene and chloroform. As a strong organic acid, oxalic acid undergoes neutralization reactions with bases.
