Sodium Bicarbonate Solution: A Pathway to Sodium Hydrosulfide
2025-08-15
Anhydrous sodium hydrosulfide
Prepared as described above under strict moisture-free conditions.
Aqueous NaHS Solution
Sodium sulfide nonahydrate (Na₂S·9H₂O) is dissolved in freshly distilled water to make a 13% (w/v) Na₂S solution.
Under stirring and below 20°C, 14 g NaHCO₃ is added to 100 mL of this solution, causing immediate dissolution and exothermic reaction.
100 mL methanol is then added (keeping temperature <20°C), precipitating Na₂CO₃ crystals.
After 10 min, the mixture is filtered, and the residue is washed with 50 mL methanol.
The filtrate contains ≥9 g NaHS and ≤0.6 g Na₂CO₃ (~3.5 g NaHS and 0.2 g Na₂CO₃ per 100 mL).
