What is a propionic acid?
propanoic acid Basic Information
Propanoic acid, also known as propionic acid, is a short-chain saturated fatty acid with the chemical formula CH₃CH₂COOH and a molecular weight of 74.08. As a weak electrolyte (Ka = 1.34 × 10⁻⁵), propanoic acid exhibits weak acidity in aqueous solution but is highly corrosive. Its vapor can irritate the skin and respiratory tract. Under standard temperature and pressure, propanoic acid is a colorless, clear, oily liquid with a pungent, rancid odor. It is miscible with water, ethanol, chloroform, and ether.
Propanoic acid is primarily used as a food preservative and antifungal agent. It also serves as an inhibitor of viscous substances in beverages such as beer, as a solvent and plasticizer for nitrocellulose, and in the preparation of nickel-plating solutions, food flavorings, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, antifungal agents, and other industrial products.
Propanoic acid is listed in the Catalogue of Hazardous Chemicals and is regulated under the Regulations on the Safety Management of Hazardous Chemicals.
