What is Ethylene Glycol? What are its Uses?
Ethylene glycol (EG), also known as "glycol alcohol" or "1,2-ethanediol", is the simplest diol with the chemical formula (CH₂OH)₂. It is a colorless, odorless liquid with a sweet taste, low toxicity to animals, and an estimated human lethal dose of approximately 1.6 g/kg.
Its applications are extremely extensive. In daily life, ethylene glycol can be polymerized into polyester and resins, used to make humectants, moisturizers, cosmetics, and explosives, as well as serving as solvents and dehydrating agents. Industrially, resins and polyester fibers synthesized from ethylene glycol are used as raw materials for medicine bottles and water bottles, and can also be formulated into industrial antifreezes and coolants.
Ethylene glycol is miscible with water and acetone, but has limited solubility in ethers. It is primarily used as a solvent, antifreeze, and raw material for polyester synthesis. Its high polymer, polyethylene glycol (PEG), acts as a phase transfer catalyst and is used in cell fusion; its nitrate derivative is an explosive.
When ethylene glycol is converted to polyethylene glycol, it no longer forms the toxic substances mentioned above, and its toxicity is greatly reduced. Polyethylene glycol, a polymer of ethylene oxide hydrolysis products, is non-toxic and non-irritating, and is widely used in various pharmaceutical formulations.
