What is the method of propionic acid and propionic acid ethanol carbonation?

2025-10-14

Propionic Acid and propanoic acid Ethanol Carbonylation Method

This method was initially developed by A company. In an acidic medium at 250–350°C and 10–30 MPa, using catalysts such as boron trifluoride, carbon tetrachloride, copper acetate, halides of manganese, aluminum, nickel, cobalt, or iron, and acids of chromium, molybdenum, or tungsten, ethanol reacts with carbon monoxide in the liquid phase to produce propionic acid, with a yield of 90%. However, due to unresolved issues such as reaction rate, yield, catalyst loss, and equipment corrosion under high temperature and pressure, this method has not been widely adopted in propionic acid and propanoic acid industry.
