Propionic Acid Used as a raw material in organic synthesis, primarily for producing propionate salts and esters. Its calcium and sodium salts are excellent preservatives for baked goods and cereals. Its esters can be used as fragrances and specialty solvents in coatings. Phenylmercuric propionate is an effective fungicide for coatings. Propionic acid can also be used as an additive in silage.
