Propionic acid comes from
Acrylonitrile Method
Using Group IV–VIII metal sulfides or their mixtures as catalysts, acrylonitrile is hydrogenated at 200–250°C and 0.3–0.5 MPa to produce propionic acid with a yield of up to 90%. While theoretically feasible, the key to this method lies in securing an industrial source of acrylonitrile.
