Sodium hydrosulfide appears as colorless needle-shaped crystals. It is highly deliquescent and decomposes at its melting point, releasing hydrogen sulfide. It is readily soluble in water and alcohols, forming a strongly alkaline aqueous solution. It reacts with acids to produce hydrogen sulfide. In moist air, it rapidly decomposes into sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide, releasing heat and posing a risk of spontaneous combustion. When heated in dry air, it turns yellow, then orange, and becomes black when molten. Dissolving it in HCl generates H₂S with a vigorous reaction. It is hygroscopic, absorbs moisture easily, and oxidizes readily. During storage, it often releases hydrogen sulfide and sulfur. In the dye industry, it is used to synthesize organic intermediates and as an auxiliary agent for preparing sulfur dyes. In the leather industry, it is used for depilating hides and tanning. In the fertilizer industry, it is used to remove elemental sulfur from activated carbon desulfurizers. It is widely used in copper ore beneficiation in the mining industry, for sulfurous acid dyeing in man-made fiber production, and as a raw material for manufacturing ammonium sulfide and the intermediate of the pesticide ethyl mercaptan. It is also used in wastewater treatment. It is produced by absorbing hydrogen sulfide gas with a solution of alkali sulfide or caustic soda.
